Effective Water Disinfection Through Ozonation Process

A prominent bird park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city had seek Hydro Nusantara’s services to improve on their water quality of their flamingo bird pond.

It was an essential action to improve the water quality of the pond contaminated by bird feed and defecation and meet the requirement of the local wildlife authority’s strict compliance for care of wildlife exhibits.

The technology applied in this improvement works is based on Ozonation, which has 40% higher in oxidation strength of microorganisms in water when compared to the usual chlorination process.

Principles of Ozonation

Ozonation is a water disinfectant treatment process that involves the use of ozone (O3), a powerful oxidizing agent. Ozone is produced when air is passed over a ceramic dielectric ozone generating module containing a stainless steel electrode. The module is powered by a high voltage or high frequency power board that splits the oxygen molecules in air into individual free oxygen atoms.

The equation below shows the formation of ozone through the combination of oxygen molecules (O2) and free oxygen atom (O) :

O2 ​+ O → O3

​The ozone produced is then injected into water systems for disinfection, effectively eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi and other pathogens.
