In 2020, Hydro Nusantara addressed the growing problem of algae blooms in off-river storage systems in Malaysia, helping the client to find an effective solution. By introducing the MPC-Buoy system, we have successfully improved water quality while preventing harmful algae growth. This innovative approach to algae control has become a key solution in ensuring the safety and cleanliness of water resources in Malaysia.
The Challenges of Algal Blooms
Malaysia’s warm climate, abundant sunlight, and nutrient-rich waters create ideal conditions for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Over the past decade, the country has experienced an increase in these events, which pose serious risks to water ecosystems and human activities. Algae blooms can deplete oxygen levels in water bodies, release harmful toxins, and disrupt the balance of aquatic life. Managing this environmental challenge requires proactive algae control measures that not only address current blooms but also prevent future occurrences.
Innovative Algae Control with MPC-Buoy
To tackle this challenge, we introduced LG Sonic’s MPC-Buoy system into a selected location’s off-river storage infrastructure. The system uses advanced ultrasound technology to treat water sourced from rivers before it is stored in large reservoirs adjacent to water treatment plants. By preventing algae growth at the source, the MPC-Buoy plays a vital role in keeping harmful algae from entering treatment facilities.
This partnership, initiated by Hydro Nusantara, has proven crucial in monitoring, predicting, and controlling algae intrusion. The MPC-Buoy’s ability to control algae without relying on chemicals provides an environmentally friendly and effective solution, ensuring the long-term security of the water supply.
Real-Time Monitoring for Proactive Solutions
A key feature of the MPC-Buoy system is its real-time water quality monitoring. Every 10 minutes, the system collects essential data, including Chlorophyll α (green algae), Phycocyanin (blue-green algae), pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. This continuous flow of information gives a detailed snapshot of the water’s health, enabling immediate responses to any deviations.
By providing this real-time data, the MPC-Buoy helps water managers make informed decisions, ensuring prompt action is taken to prevent or mitigate algae blooms. This data-driven approach to algae control not only ensures a cleaner water supply but also contributes to more effective water management practices in the long term.
A Sustainable Future for Malaysian Rivers
The successful integration of the MPC-Buoy system into Malaysia’s water management strategy highlights the far-reaching benefits of this technology. Harmful Algal Blooms, though a natural occurrence, can have devastating impacts on water quality, aquatic life, and even local economies. The MPC-Buoy offers a sustainable, long-term solution for monitoring and controlling these blooms, preventing costly environmental damage.
By embracing this forward-thinking approach, we not only curbed the immediate effects of algae blooms but has also created a framework for sustainable water management. This achievement underscores the critical role that innovative technology plays in protecting water resources and safeguarding public health.
